  • To Our Members and Communities,

AltaOne Federal Credit Union is a strong member-owned financial cooperative and proud to be your trusted partner. We exist to help all our 55,000+ members throughout Kern, Inyo, and Mono counties and beyond, by helping them achieve their goals and attain financial freedom.

Friday, and over the weekend, two banks located in California and New York were seized by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and have been reopened under their direction. The FDIC has stated that although most of the deposits at both institutions were uninsured, their customers will continue to have access to all their funds.

You may have concerns about the US banking system. Please rest assured that the banking system is working how it was designed, to protect depositors.

    AltaOne’s Strong and Diversified Membership

Through the years, AltaOne has helped the areas we call home to survive and thrive regardless of economic conditions, weather patterns, earthquakes, the COVID pandemic, or the opening and closing of industries. Our prudent financial management has had its critics, but our results show that we are financially strong with over $780 million in total assets and over $66 million in net worth, which is more than $11 million above the required federal regulatory level for well capitalized institutions. Additionally, the credit union recognized over $4 million in net income in 2022. Our financials are always available and can be viewed at the NCUA’s website and are posted at each branch location.

Our strength is due to our diversification. We serve many communities and hard-working families who are eager to find the best financial path for their lives. They work in various industries and are not concentrated in any specific type of business. From education to military, healthcare to farm workers and municipal to the petroleum industry, we have proudly served those who power our local communities for 76 years.

Our Focus is on Helping Members and Our Communities

We continue our mission to improve the inequalities that exist in income, wealth, and access to financial solutions. Our focus remains on meeting the financial needs of those who work and live in Kern, Inyo, and Mono counties.

If you have questions, please reach out to your local branch or directly to me.

    Thank you for your membership,

    Stephanie Sievers, CEO

  • RIDGECREST, CA — January 19, 2023 — Scammers are always trying to get into our pockets and one of their scams is called Smishing. Similar to Phishing emails, except Smishing is done through text messages. You probably receive many text messages a day, with quite a few from unknown numbers.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Smishing is when “Scammers send fake text messages to trick you into giving them your personal information— things like your password, account number or Social Security number. If they get that information, they could gain access to your email, bank, or other accounts. Or they could sell your information to other scammers.”

Another thing smishing scammers do is claim to be someone in authority, like a boss, family member, or friend.

Recently, a few employees at AltaOne Federal Credit Union (AltaOne) received the following text message from an unknown number, purported to be from the credit union’s CEO Stephanie Sievers:

Hi let me know if you are available. There is something I need you to do and also your confidentiality would be appreciated. Reply me here once you get this. Thanks Stephanie Sievers.

This text message did not actually come from Stephanie Sievers, it came from a scammer. This smishing attempt follows a familiar pattern: Text from someone with authority to build trust, followed by a request to purchase gift cards, transfer money, or give out information.

Scammers will entice victims with promises of prizes or winnings, low interest credit cards and loans, and loan payoffs. Sometimes they even use threats of arrest, being sued, or collections.

If you get a text message from an unknown number or even a number you know, asking you to do something that is out of the ordinary, you should confirm if it is legitimate.

When you are not confident of the text sender, contact the sender at a known phone number—not the number in the text message, to verbally verify if the message is indeed from them. Do not give out personal information via text. Text messaging is not always secure.

Amer Hameed, AltaOne’s Assistant Vice President of Information Security states, “Situational awareness even in our digital world is important because every interaction we make could potentially be a targeted scam by cyber criminals. Basic common sense is the key to protecting ourselves from falling for scams whether it be by email, phone, or text message.”

To help stop scammers from contacting you through text messaging, the FTC recommends the following:

On your phone: Block the number on your cell phone. Your phone may have an option to filter and block spam or messages from unknown senders.

Through your wireless provider: They may have a service that lets you block calls and text messages. Visit ctia.org, a website from the wireless industry, to learn about options from different providers.

    • AT&T: https://www.att.com/security/security-apps/

    • Verizon: https://www.verizon.com/support/residential/internet/essentials/internet-security-suite

    • T-Mobile: https://www.t-mobile.com/support/devices/lookout-mobile-security-app

With a call-blocking app: Visit ctia.org for a list of call-blocking apps for Android, BlackBerry, Apple, and Windows phones. Pay special attention to the features, user ratings, and expert reviews.

Reporting on your phone: Report the text on the messaging app you use. Look for the option to report junk or spam.

Report it to the FTC: Go to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

If you receive unrequested text messages claiming to be from AltaOne, contact the credit union to confirm at (800) 433-9727, online at AltaOne.org or visit a branch.

  • RIDGECREST, CA — December 5, 2022 — After 40 years of distinguished service to AltaOne Federal Credit Union, Colleen Bulgarelli, Branch Manager of the Lake Isabella and Kernville branches has retired.

Bulgarelli started her career as a teller at the China Lake Base Branch in 1982. After progressing through the ranks and moving to Lake Isabella, she ends her career managing the two Kern River Valley branch locations.

“Colleen has shown exceptional leadership and leaves a legacy of service to her team and community. She will definitely be missed.”, said Stephanie Sievers, AltaOne CEO.

Bulgarelli stated, “I met my husband David while working at the credit union and the credit union played a part in the raising of my kids! Back then work/life balance wasn’t something considered, but the credit union allowed me to work part time for many years so I could spend more time with my children. I feel this enabled us to give them a great foundation, which shows in their lives now.” Bulgarelli’s children have grown up to be medical professionals— daughter Jamy is an OBGYN and son Cody is a Physician Assistant.

Looking back Bulgarelli said some of her mentors included Donna Hollingsworth and Marie Riggs. “Donna showed me how to build a high performing team and to lead with compassion and empathy. Marie offered life advice. She told me when I was hired to start preparing for retirement now, which I did by adjusting my 401k deductions regularly and investing for the future, ensuring we were set to enjoy retirement.”

Among the things Bulgarelli will miss about the credit union are the members, team, and serving the community. “I plan to continue serving the community, but in a different capacity.” Bulgarelli said.

“I have always believed in the credit union’s culture, it’s what’s kept me here. We truly care about our members and communities and work to make them better.” added Bulgarelli.

Looking ahead Bulgarelli plans to travel, spend time with family, and see where things take her. “I am excited to get out and use my e-bike, travel trailer, and spoil my grandson.”

“We are in the process of recruiting a new manager for Lake Isabella and Kernville. It’s important for us to find the perfect person to continue our legacy of community service.”, Sievers said about the search for Bulgarelli’s replacement. Interested individuals may review the job description at AltaOne.org/Careers.

  • RIDGECREST, CA— June 2, 2022 — On May 31, 2022, the U.S. Department of the Treasury certified AltaOne Federal Credit Union (AltaOne) as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), a designation held by less than 1,300 financial institutions nationwide and less than 150 in California. AltaOne is the only CDFI headquartered in Kern County, California.

CDFIs are financial institutions that have a history of creating opportunities and access to financial services while providing capital in low-income, disadvantaged communities. The goal is to create jobs, build homes and improve the lives of those who reside there.

The CDFI certification will allow AltaOne to receive grants from the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund. Grants from the fund will enable AltaOne to further its mission of serving communities in areas that have limited or no availability to financial services.

AltaOne’s CEO, Stephanie Sievers, said, “We are honored to be recognized by the U.S. Department of the Treasury for our dedication in serving our members. We proudly accept this designation, and we will continue to provide needed financial services, educational opportunities, and affordable lending in our communities. For fiscal year 2022, Congress appropriated $214.5 million for the CDFI Fund, and is expected to appropriate $331,420 million for fiscal year 2023.

AltaOne’s CDFI certification is for an Investment Area and Low-Income Target Population in Kern, Inyo, San Bernardino, Mono, Los Angeles, Tulare and Orange counties in California, Clark County in Nevada, and Mohave County in Arizona.
