Visa Check CardQ. I already have an AltaOne ATM card, how do I obtain my AltaOne Visa check card? A. You must have a checking account with AltaOne to receive the Visa check card. If you currently have a checking account and an ATM card, the Visa check card will replace your ATM card when it expires. If you want the Visa check card sooner than that, or do not currently have an ATM card for your checking account, simply call or visit your nearest service center. Q. What is the difference between an AltaOne Visa check card and an AltaOne ATM card? A. The Visa check card works just like your ATM card and has many other great benefits. In addition to using your Visa check card at ATMs, you can make purchases from businesses that do not accept ATM cards (i.e. most department stores), and you can use it anywhere Visa is accepted, such as online and over the phone. The ATM card can only be used at ATMs. Q. What is the difference between pushing the "credit" button and pushing the "debit" button? A. A "credit" purchase (signature-based transaction) will allow only the total amount of the purchase to be posted to your checking account and requires a signature. A "debit" purchase (Personal Identification Number (PIN)-based transaction) will allow the total amount of the purchase as well as any cash back to be posted to your checking account immediately. A "debit" purchase requires your PIN to be entered. Both "debit" and "credit" transactions will be deducted exclusively from your checking account. Q. I already have an AltaOne Visa credit card, why do I need an AltaOne Visa check card? A. Your AltaOne Visa credit card is a line of credit that limits the dollar amount of purchases to the amount of funds that you have available before reaching your maximum credit limit. You must pay back purchases that you make on your AltaOne Visa credit card with interest and you must have an eligible credit record to obtain one. AltaOne Visa check cards are available to members with checking accounts. Purchases with your Visa check card are approved if there are funds available in your checking account. You don't have to pay interest on these purchases. The Visa check card carries the Visa logo for convenience purposes. Q. Will a hold be put on my Visa check card when I reserve a hotel room with it? A. When using your check card to pay merchants such as hotels, to purchase gas, or to rent a vehicle please be sure to use the "credit" side of your check card. This insures that the merchant will not place an indiscriminate hold, above the amount of the charge, on your account. This is not true of ALL merchants, but is the case when paying for hotels, gas, and rental cars. Q. I selected the "debit" key and used my PIN for a purchase and it was denied. If I select the "credit" key, will it also be denied? A. Not exactly. If the reason for the denial is "insufficient funds", the purchase will be denied. If the reason for denial is, "contact your financial institution", we suggest that the purchase be attempted again by selecting the "credit" key. If the purchase is still denied, make sure that you do not have any holds on your account, and then contact AltaOne. Q. Does overdraft protection cover my Visa check card? A. If you attempt to make a purchase with your Visa check card and do not have enough money in your checking account to cover the purchase, it will overdraft to your savings account or your Visa line of credit. Once the overdraft sources are exhausted then Courtesy Pay will be activated. Q. My Visa check card was lost or stolen, am I covered against unauthorized use? A. Yes. To assure proper dispute rights, be sure to report your card lost or stolen immediately by calling our Electronic Member Services Department at (760) 371-7000 or toll-free (800) 433-9727. Your Visa check card is covered with Visa charge back and dispute rights, as well as, AltaOneβ's fraud policy. After regular branch hours members can report their cards lost/stolen to 1-800-VISA-911. There is also an option on the phone after hours to report a member's card lost or stolen. Q. Why won't the machine read my Visa check card? A. You may have de-magnetized the strip on the back of your Visa check card. Ask the merchant to enter your card number manually. Q. I made a deposit of $500 at the ATM with my Visa check card and want to get $200 back in cash. Why won't it let me do that? A. You are able to withdraw up to $400 per day from an ATM provided that you have that amount available in your account. In this example, if your balance before the deposit was $200 you would be able to withdraw a total of $300 from the ATM. Each time you deposit through the ATM an automatic hold is placed on those funds for two business days, with the exception of $100 which is released immediately. The next business day an additional $100 would be released followed by the remaining funds on the second business day. When you make your deposit, the ATM receipt will show this as an increase in your "available balance", and the "new balance" on the receipt will include the total amount of that day's ATM deposit.
